Psycho-Pass 3: First Inspector review

The Foxes against the Sibyl System in the third chapter of the anime crime series

Psycho-Pass 3 review

Psycho-Pass season 3. A renewed cast of Inspectors for the Sibyl System.

Psycho-Pass 3 is the legit sequel of the well-known sci-fi anime Psycho-Pass and Psycho-Pass 2. This time, the storyplot produced by Production I.G. introduces a completely new cast of Inspectors and Enforcers. The two protagonist are Arata Shindo, who has the peculiar capability of analyzing the situation mentalist skills known as a Mental Trace. Arata is accompanied by his mate and friend Kei Mikhail Ignatov, asecond-generation Russian immigrant, naturalized Japanese. He is married to another former veteran named Maiko Maya Stronskaya who was blinded in an explosion. Kei is a former military veteran who excels in fighting and shooting and has a strong sense of justice.

A new episode-format for the storyplot.

Psycho-Pass 3 chooses a new format to show itself to the audience. The episodes becomes of 45-min length, completely changing the cinematic rules. The spectator may be astonished by this novel approach since for the format to work properly, it has to continuosly rise the attention. In doing this, Psycho-Pass sometimes fails. Sometimes, the thrilling emotion is not sustained by the facts. The storyplot which sustains Psycho-Pass 3 is fair, nothing special for an audience who has already seen the previous two chapter of the series. The fascination of the anime crime would have been completely enhanced in case of a massive return of the previous characters (Shinya Kogami and Akane Tsunemori, previous review of Psycho-Pass here).

Psycho-Pass 3: Akane vs Arata and Ignatov vs Kogami.

Psycho-Pass 3 misses the opportunity to create an organic relation between the various seasons of Psycho-Pass. To become one of the greatest sci-fi animes of recent year, the lack of an underlaying common connections in the storyline feels like a burden. Moreover, to be completely explicit, the mere introduction of first season characters without a strong motivation at its basis it is not sufficient.

For this reason, the comparison Akane Tsunemori – Arata Shindo appears completely superficial as offered by the anime series. The trust of Akane in Justice (exploited very well in season 1) cannot be compared to that of Arata, who seems to act only to find out the truth about its past. The philosophical contribution of Psycho-Pass (see our review The Social Justice of the Sibyl System), appeared faded in the second season (The Paradox of Ominipotence) and set to zero in Psycho-Pass 3.

Ignatov and Kogami. Psycho-pass 3: First Inspector.

The match between Ignatov and Kogami does not goes beyond the physical level. It does not configure between a clash of two opposite convictions. It only remarks the expert Kogami as a winner who accepts the request of Ignatov, a request that also a “young” version of Kogami would have fought for.

Foxes and Bifrost, the dark side of the Sibyl.

The fundamental point of Psycho-Pass 3 is the presence of an alterantive “organization” referred as the Bifrost. The break-point of the Sibyl System resides inside itself. In fact, the Bifrost is simply the maintainance system of Sibyl and wanted to take over its “father”. The way the Bifrost organisation has to influence the external world is through manipulation. With the word manipulation we identify a complete category of actions such as financial manuevers, support of terrorist factions and politics. The Foxes are the instruments of the Bifrost to alter the status quo preserved by the Sibyl.
