Sprint Race: how it works
In the new mechanism of the Sprint Race, Friday becomes a decisive day. Only one free practice session is scheduled . Subsequently there will be the classic qualifications that will determine the line-up of the Sprint Qualifying scheduled in the afternoon on Saturday 17 July. The Sprint Qualifying will last about half an hour: the drivers will cover 100 km which, on the Silverstone circuit, is equivalent to 17 laps.
Sprint Qualifying: no pit stops
In short, a mini race, without pit stops: the driver who will win the Sprint Race on Sunday will start on pole position. The order of arrival at the end of the 17 laps will form the starting grid of Sunday’s race. The top three finishers of the Sprint Race will get points for the Formula 1 World Championship standings: the winner will have 3 points, the second 2 and the third 1.
