On the Way to Japanese GP 2019: Technical preview

This weekend we’re heading to one of the historical tracks of F1. The Japanese race is wrapped by an emotionally dense atmosphere. Also Japanese fans are quite unique in the f1 club. S. Vettel poited out this track as one of his favourites: in fact, it’s quite complete in terms of variety of turns it offers. Mercedes is going to show here the last aerodynamic package for this season. Toto’s and Co. are worried about Ferrari’s revival in last races and they want to bring home the championships conquering the 1st position also in these last races.

The aero configuration is of medium downforce: it should guarantee top speed in the straight of the 3rd sector and good stability/manouverability in the more technical sectors. A combination of high speed turns like the 130R and the Spoon curve together with very slow turns (i.e.  the hairpin) requires a great effort solving the compromise between mechanical (medium-low speed) and aerodynamical (high speed) grip.

Fuel consumption is a factor for this race since the cars have open throttle for about 70% of the lap: 101 kg of fuel the amount expected to finish the race. The central role og the thermal power unit reflects in the energy coming from the MGU-H (about 3200 kJ) which is 4 times the one reconverted from braking by MGU-K.F1 tyres Japan 2019

Rumours says that RedBull and Mercedes are raising perplexities about Ferrari’s engine and in particular after the Spec 3 release. As pointed out in the last race analysis|After the race|, the top speed of Ferrari is now very similar to the one of Mercedes. In fact the rebalance process of Ferrari after the last aeropackage determined an increased downforce and therefore, drag limiting the top speed superiority of the Pracing Horse. But so, why is Ferrari still gaining time in straight? The answer stand in the acceleration profile of Ferrari. In the very initial phase of acceleration, Ferrari is able to put more power on the track.

A possible way to do that is hinted in an earlier recharge of the battery: this scenario is eligible whenever the Italian thermal engine is more efficient that the ones of the competitors. Someone says it is related to fact that Ferrari engineers have found a trick to burn part of the oil present in the intercooler in the combustion chamber.
