|After the race| Singapore GP: the comments
Victory of Leclerc denied? Is that the main issue we have to talk about? No. That’s only a collateral effect of Ferrari’s performance. Nobody, even here, expected the pace, the consistency of the Prancing Horse. Mercedes not in the podium: enough for Toto’s headache.
Before the race analysis: what did we see on Saturday’s qualifying?
Pure Magic. The last time-lap of Charles Leclerc. Pole. The achievement from which the weekend overturns. Unfortunately, another time the young Ferrari driver overperformed his team mate Sebastian Vettel in quali. That was an important step for the check mate. A interesting comparison of Leclerc’s and Hamilton’s telemetry is reported below. e notice that Leclerc tends to mantain the pressure on the throttle pedal even in the turns.
This driving style (we do not know if adopted only for this race weekend) allows to mantain higher the engine rpm (1000-1500 rpm compared to Mercedes) and therefore gives 3 main advantages:
- Turbo Lag reduction: in other words to reduce the time lapse betwwen the input (driver’s feet) and the output of the engine in terms of power;
- More torque: at low regimes, mantaining higher rpm may guaratee higher value of torque;
- Rear stability: due to manly the fact that lecler could downshift less (gears) reducing the rear instability; moreover, with the throttle always pushed, the aerodynamic devices located in the rear position of the car can work and generate a little more downforce.
Did you remember the Red Bull of the Golder age? Nowadays, is different and fuel cannot be burnt during the release phase of throttle, but that principle os not denied if it is determined by the driver.
It’s 1-2 Ferrari. In Singapore: the place where Mercedes and Reb Bull have been designed as favourites. The particular condition of Singapore’s evening greatly adapted to Ferrati and to the new aero-package. In fact, also regarding tyre management, we saw that the Italian team did a great job: Hamiton’s attempt to overcut was weakened by his soft tyres wear.
Leclerc: Very focused in the aim, perfect start and great race management following the request of the team. The driver’s proud reflects on the tries he made to overcome and getting close. Despite the record missed (of three races win in a row as Hill and Hakkinen. But also this can be a growing-up event. GRADE: 9.5/10.
Hamilton: the attempt of overcut failed. It was probably the only choice Mercedes had to beat Ferrari in the race. Outstanding performance in Qualifying giving +0.8 sec to his team mate avoiding a first line completely Red. GRADE: 6.5/10.
Bottas: Hey, it’s James. Classical team order. But in this season they’re already a lot. Probably neither the best Barrichello could have afford these situations. We want you back in Sochi! GRADE: 6.5/10.
Verstappen: Very good strategy, the undercut was very powerfull. Great shot smashing Mercedes out of the podium. GRADE: 7/10.
Giovinazzi: No mistakes also this weekend. Thanks to him, Alfa to lead a Gp again. After a difficult strategy the Safety Car brings him back to the game and he scores a point. Need results to drive away Hulkenberg. GRADE: 7/10.
Vettel: Same grade of Leclerc. Probably not perfect even this weekend. P3 in Quali. But his attachment to Ferrari is not under discussion. Confirmation from the podium. Probably not technically spotless this weekend but he scores the victory he needs to recover. He already knows the win is not completely deserved and should be shared with Leclerc, the mute team radio at the end of the race is the proof. #EssereFerrari GRADE: 9.5/10.
Ferrari’s pace confirms also in the other tracks? What do you think? Let’s go to Russia…
